Snograt, you came into Campfire! w00t! Your post is /win, btw...

OT:

The only thing you are going to be able to do is spam Necrosis and/or Discord. That's it for direct damage. If you're feeling lucky, take along Signet of Sorrow. It can be fun if your target is near a corpse a la: Necrosis -> SigSorrow-> Necrosis -> SigSorrow -> etc.

Then the forums lack a properly organized divisions. If I want to make a new necro thread discussing a a certain build, where should I post it? - The necro forums

Not in the Gladiator's Arena, it's too general. Class specific builds shouldn't be discussed there, it will be too clustered. This is the necro forum after all and thus all necro related builds should be posted here.

So even though we're in the The Campfire section of the forums, deciding that a question or a build is PvE oriented is a mistake. Of course that if the forums aren't divided correctly (in my eyes at least) then you're correct. If that's the case then I suggest opening duplicate forums in the PvP section just like these here.

PvP is about creating a team build, not individuals. If someone is asking for a single build they're not talking about PvP, except maybe RA, but there is already a thread for RA builds in Gladiator's.

gotta agree with racthoh, pvp should be TvT or something, cause its not player versus player, but players versus players (or team versus team)... except for RA and HB... anyhow, direct damage you got deathly swarm too, only countersides are that it has a long casting time for its effect, and aoe isnt that nice... if they would change it to be more than just 2 more targets, like all nearby foes, then it would be nice

In any case, you asked why people automatically assume PvE, and it was answered, basically, that these are PvE forums.

the answer really doesn't get any easier. I don't think the setup is very user-friendly either, but It's not enough to complain about

ss is indirect, because the relationship between casting the spell and inflicting damage is not directly connected. the damage is connected to the actions of opponent, not to the actions of the person casting the spell.
EVERY spell is connected to the actions of the opponent AND the caster. For example, Savannah Heat - if I move out of the area, then I no longer take damage. Is SH indirect damage?

Eh...

I'm not saying I don't have a grasp of what direct damage is. I do "feel" that SS is indirect damage while fireball is direct damage.

I'm just saying, the definition isn't perfectly clear. Notice that you use the word "direct" to define the term "direct damage?" That's a nono, when you try to write up an extended definition. Your definition and the wiki definition are completely self-referential. The wiki definition is basically: "direct damage is damage dealt directly."

This is a problem. It isn't a clear definition.
The wiki defines it as:
"Direct damage is a term for damage that comes from skills that affect one or more targets instantly, rather than over a period of time."

That basically excludes all forms of Damage over time skills or that take a period of time/event to occur.

May I add just one more comment that is off topic? (I just want to add this because people seem to confuse others and it drives me nuts)

A single player build is very, very important. I don't think that anyone who commented otherwise is a hard-core pvp player. I admit that I haven't played high-end pvp in a while but I know the crucial importance of mix matching single player builds to keep your foes on their toes. If you just copy-past a team build you're going to be a very predictable opponent and are likely to lose to experienced players.

I'm not saying that team builds aren't important, it's just that they don't diminish the importance of single player builds. Which more than deserve a rightful place on these forums.

I could've explained in more details but this isn't the place. I hope that I was clear enough.

I think Racthoh means that in PvP, you do not look at a person's build as an individual build, but as part of a team build.
I'm not sure what you're post is getting at, but yes; an individual's build is important, but it must be looked at as a part of something bigger before any conclusive or accurate judgements can be made.
